1. West University Place
The City of West University Place truly offers the best of both worlds: the feel of a small town community combined with the amenities of big-city life. Located just west of Rice University, the area is shaded by magnificent oak trees. The Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and downtown Houston are just minutes away, making this neighborhood an ideal location for doctors and educators. The shops of Rice Village, are well known for their upscale retailers and rare finds.
West University was incorporated as an independent city in 1924, and still boasts its own mayor, city council, police and fire departments. The community takes great pride in its schools, organized sport teams and its many parks and recreational areas.
A strong elementary school makes the location popular with young families. The fourteen-acre campus of West University Elementary is the focal point of the city, and is ringed with churches, a library, small businesses, and civic buildings.
From its earliest days in the 30's and 40's, homes in West University have always been mixed in style, with both two-story brick traditional homes and one-story frame bungalows. Today, some of the older, smaller homes are being replaced with new construction, while the city has embarked on an ambitious re-development plan for streets, sidewalks, curbs, and sewers.
