Real Estate Careers

So many times I hear people talk about making a ton of money by selling real estate in their spare time.  Huh???  Where on earth does that misconception come from?

A career in real estate is a serious, full-time job. True, you have a flexible schedule.  But as the old joke says, self-employment is having complete freedom to choose which 18 hours a day you choose to work!

Successful real estate sales people have several key personality traits:  They must be ethical and reputable.  They must be self-motivated and self-disciplined.  They must be able to work well with customers, and they must be able to collaborate with other agents. Above all else, successful agents must be good listeners.

Successful agents are both sales people and business people. They must be competent in the legal mechanics of contract law.  They must understand the legal and tax consequences of being an independent contractor. They must grasp key marketing concepts and apply them consistently in their real estate practices.

It takes time to build a successful real estate career – you should count on three years or more. During this crucial development stage, you will need stamina, both physical and financial.  A stable and supportive family environment is a huge plus.

Having said all that – come on in, the water’s fine!  A real estate career can be one of the most satisfying professions on the planet.
