5. Braeswood/Meyerland
Braes Bayou runs east-west across south-central Houston, passing through Meyerland, Braeswood, and several smaller neighborhoods. Pedestrian trails line both sides of the bayou, providing ample opportunity for residents to jog, walk, and bike.
In the 70's, a non-profit organization began acquiring old apartment complexes along Stella Link. Today, this acreage has been converted to civic use, including a new YMCA, a library, Sheltering Arms, an Alzheimer's day center, and ball fields for youth sports. The campuses of the neighboring public schools are being replaced with new state of the art facilities.
One of the defining characteristic of the Meyerland area is its strong Jewish community, featuring three synagogues and the very-active Jewish Community Center.

Most houses in the Braeswood/Meyerland area were build in the 60's and 70's, and are typically one-story, brick, ranch homes surrounded by large yards. Re-development of this area has just begun, but is not been as extensive as some of Houston's older neighborhoods, and homes here can sometimes be more affordable.
