Technology for Seniors

Nicolas JeanJean, Eagle Scout Candidate, will teach Technology to SeniorsAs part of his Eagle Scout service project, Nicolas Jeanjean, a junior at Carnegie Vanguard, will teach a class in technology to West U seniors at the West University Community Center.  He plans to study engineering in college.

“I will teach seniors how to use many of the apps that can make life easier for them,” says Jeanjean, who grew up in the City of West University Place.

“We will learn how to use Skype, What’s App, Uber, Amazon and Viber,” Jeanjean says. “I am looking forward to being able to teach the seniors and interact with them. I do not get to do that very often because my one grandmother is in France and my other grandparents are in Saigon.”

His father, Philippe Jeanjean is a civil engineer with BP. His mother, Thu Hang, was the inspiration for the class. 

“I noticed that whenever my mom video calls my grandparents, they have problems with what button to press,” he says.

Be a Grass Roots Advocate in West University Place!

Thanks to a $2.2MM gift from the family of Jennie E. Hughes, the southeast quadrant of West University Place is finally getting some public greenspace!  With regard to parks, this section of our community is the most under-served part of the city.  It is the only quadrant of our neighborhood where children must cross a busy, four-lane street to reach a green space.  Plans for a park have been in the works for at least twenty years – and now it is happening at last!

The City is currently soliciting citizen input for the design of our newest park space.  Go to to review three possible concept sketches.  All three designs include passive features appropriate to a “quiet use” park.  Pick your favorite, and email your comments to before April 16, 2017.  This is your chance to be a Grass Roots Advocate!

Welcome to Lori Loria Hess!

Lori Loria Hess, real estate salesperson at Roger Martin PropertiesRoger Martin Properties is happy to welcome Realtor Lori Loria Hess to our real estate team.  

Lori is fluent in Spanish. She grew up in Mexico City, the daughter of Jose Loria, an attorney, and Myra Loria, a high school history teacher from Brooklyn. “I loved Mom’s stuffed cabbage and her chicken mole enchiladas,” Lori says. “I still cook those dishes today.” 

“I have been a West University resident for more than 10 years,” Lori says. 

“My husband and I love this neighborhood so much, that we began building new construction homes here.”  

Before joining Roger Martin, Lori worked in petrochemical sales, focusing on Latin America.  After her daughter’s birth, she shifted to a career that did not require international travel and used her knowledge of cultures to develop an expertise in real estate. In her spare time, Lori teaches yoga and delivers food to seniors for Meals on Wheels.
