New Gardens in Hermann Park - Opening 2014

Garden Mount at McGovern Centennial Gardens in Hermann ParkI am looking forward to the completion of these new gardens in Hermann Park.  The most interesting design element is this “Garden Mount”, which can be seen from the Museum of Natural Science.  A handicap-accessible ramp spirals up to the top of the mount, from which we will be able to view and appreciate all 15 acres of the McGovern Centennial Gardens.  The new gardens will still have the rose gardens for which this park is known, and will add a woodland garden, a celebration garden, and an international sculpture promenade.  A water cascade will run from the top of the mount to a reflection pond.  To teach children about gardening and healthy eating, an interactive family garden will provide fruit, vegetable and herb beds.  We Houstonians really love our green space, so here’s hoping the kids will be able to (literally) roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty!

Oil and Gas Industry Impacts Houston Economy

Houston is a regional, national and international center for the oil and gas industry.  A healthy oil and gas industry is a major component of Houston's growing economy.  And that, in turn, creates a strong demand for quality housing. 

Check out this great article about Houston's oil and gas industry written by Dr. Robert Gilmer and published in Tierra Grande, the real estate magazine from Texas A&M.  Dr. Gilmer is the economist who was formerly with the Dallas Federal Reserve, and who now heads up the Institute for Regional Forecasting at the University of Houston.

Reducing Your Texas Property Taxes - Tips & Tools

For most homeowners, a Residential Homestead Exemption can significantly reduce property taxes.  If you have not already done so, January is the time to apply for this exemption.  The necessary application form #11.13 is provided by the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD).  This application covers all of the most common exemptions, including the residential exemption, the disabled exemption, the over 65 exemption and the surviving spouse exemption.

Be aware that the exemption application will need to be notarized.  In addition, the Texas Legislature now requires proof of residency (a copy of a valid Texas Drivers License or Texas ID card).  In addition, the address on the license must now exactly match the address on your exemption application.

Equitable and Fair

By law, your property tax assessment must be both equitable and fair.  In practice, this means that similar houses should be appraised with similar values.  It can therefore be helpful to compare your assessed value with those of your neighbors.  If your home is over-valued on the tax roles, a protest may be in order.
