REALTORS Find Guild-ed Treasures

Gaye Jackson and Gretchen Morris display their outfits from The Charity Guild, Houston, TX 77006Roger Martin Properties welcomed Gaye Jackson, Executive Director of The Guild Shop at their recent Sales Meeting. Jackson and long-time volunteer Gretchen Morris discussed the many ways REALTORS and their clients can take advantage of the great deals found at The Guild Shop. For example, home buyers can furnish their new homes with bargains. And home sellers can donate/consign if they downsize...  Stagers often find treasures at The Guild Shop as well!

Jackson has returned to Houston from Dallas to bring some fresh ideas to her beloved boutique, which was recently named not only the Best Resale Shop, but also the Best Antique Store by the Houston Press.  Jackson raffled off a couple of gift certificates for The Guild Shop and invited the team to come in and browse the unbelievable deals.

The Guild Shop has recently had some very interesting donations. The family of Texas Commerce Bank’s former chairman, the late Ben Love, donated a green Masters' golf jacket from the 60s which they sold for $18,000.  As you know, those jackets are NEVER allowed outside the clubhouse in Augusta so this was quite a coup. The Love family received an $18K tax deduction, an extra bonus.

A maritime painting dropped off by an anonymous donor recently sold for $36,000.  It hung behind the register and was not selling there so Gaye sent it to an auction house in Boston.  The Guild Shop received $27K of the $38K - pure donation for their causes, which include Amazing Place, The Gathering and St. James House.

Upcoming events include an evening of wine, cheese and appraisals with Antiques Road Show host David Lackey (5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 28).  RSVP to or call 713.528.5095.  The Guild Shop's popular Sidewalk Sale is typically scheduled for the 8 am on the last Friday and Saturday of every month.  Most items at the Sidewalk Sale are priced at a mere $1. The Guild also plans to host a REALTOR’s event in the fall.

The Guild Shop, a charity of St John the Divine Episcopal Church, is currently in its 54th year of operations. All funds stay in our own community and are dedicated to serving the elders of Houston. The shop is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, whose average age is 70 years old.  “We have been doing this together so long, we are family,” said Jackson.

The Guild Shop is located at 2009 Dunlavy Street, Houston, TX 77006 and is open 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Mon-Fri and 10am to 2pm Saturday.

The Happiest City in Texas | West University Place

Zippia recently surveyed 279 cities across the Lone Star State and found the City of West University Place to be the happiest place.

West U's Mayor Susan Sample says she is not surprised and well, she's happy about the selection.  Bellaire follows West U on the list at No. 2, with Colleyville at No. 3 and Greatwood, a golf-centric community off Interstate 59 South, checks in at No. 5. These suburban cities came in well above their Dallas sisters, namely Highland Park, which showed up at No. 7 and University Park at No. 10.

Zippia was founded in March of 2015 as a website that makes lists, all kinds of lists...the best careers, the worst careers, the most overpaid jobs, and the smartest cities.

What goes into West U's winning happiness quotient? Zippia tracked seven factors including: having an education, having a job, having a short commute, having a low cost of living, having a family, owning a home, and having a low poverty rate.

Village News | Roger Martin on Home Sales

Roger Martin, President of Roger Martin Properties, was featured in the Village News and Southwest News’ recent Home Improvements special edition in the Looking at the Market: Remodeling Permits & Home Sales.  He was quoted, “I think the new construction market in West University is strong.”

“MLS shows there are 78 single family homes as active, 27 of those are new construction of various stages. Some have not broken ground, some have just finished completion. That figure does not reflect homes going up as custom and are not for sale.  I think all together there are about 60 homes in various stages. My gut reaction is we are about where we were last year at this time.  We do still get calls from builders looking for lots and individuals wanting lots.”

Martin cautions, “Always be careful of statistics. One reason for slower reported sales is lack of inventory. If it’s not available, it is not being sold.”

West U Parks | Award for Excellence

The Texas Recreation and Park Society Institute honored the City of West University Place with its most prestigious award this month at the Galveston Island Convention Center.  West University Place is the only city with a population under 20,000 to be given this designation this year.

In receiving the Gold Medal Award, West University City Manager M. Christopher Peifer said, “The City of West University Place is so very honored to receive this recognition for the forethought of its elected officials and appointed board members over the years.

“Our residents value our parks and programs and have been extraordinarily philanthropic in support them in both in their volunteerism; as well as, their financial donations,” he says. “I am proud of the unceasing efforts of staff to create a premier program for a premier city.”

The statewide Gold Medal Award honors communities that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, community programs and events, environmental stewardship, program development, marketing and promotional efforts.  Award nominees are measured on the ability to address the needs of those they serve, and in West U, this includes many families with young children, seniors and those taking advantage of quality of life and continued health improvement offerings.
