Vicki Chu Addresses Bellaire City Council

Vicki Chu, Broker Associate, Roger Martin Properties, addresses Bellaire City CouncilDid you know you can keep up with your Bellaire City Council meetings by watching the online videos posted at

Vicki Chu is 36 year resident of the City of Bellaire and a Broker Associate with Roger Martin Properties.  Last night, she asked the Bellaire City Council to fix her sunken street. "I cut down two live oaks that were each sucking up 80 gallons of water a day, leading to subsidence around the trees. Debris and trash has been collecting in front of my house, and the street and driveway were both below grade."

Many thanks to Bellaire Public Works Director Brant Gary who promised to look into the need for infrastructure maintenance.

Historical Houston | The Galleria/Uptown Area

This Houston Public Media video, although slightly, is a fascinating look a the history of Houston's west side, as it transitioned from prairie and vegetable farms to the urban center known today as Uptown.

The two best quotes...

  • In 1948, a local reported described the roads in the Uptown/Galleria area as "... lonely, unlit, pockmarked booby traps for nocturnal animals and boozed up motorists."  Possibly still some truth in that statement!
  • And when Loop 610 was opened, "Houston residents believed that there would be no more conjested streets and traffic jams on the west side." Nope, then got that one dead wrong!

Enjoy this look at Historic Houston!

Little Free Library | Club Members Donate Books

Jeannie Lyman, Sara Eggleston & Michelle Smith donate booksJean Lyman, Sara Eggleston, and Michelle Smith, members of the Houston City Breakfast Club, were so inspired by a recent breakfast speaker that they purchased her books and donated them to the Little Free Library in West U's Colonial Park. Award-winning author Debra Winegarten, of Austin, TX, specializes in historical books about Texas women. Her recent book for middle school readers features Oveta Culp Hobby.

Oveta Culp Hobby had a life-long love of journalism and politics, beginning at age 21 when she served as parliamentarian for the Texas State Legislature. She and her husband, former Texas Governor Bill Hobby Sr, owned the Houston Post. During World War II, Oveta organized the Women's Army Corps, designed the women's uniforms, achieved the rank of colonel, and was the first woman to receive the Army's Distinguished Service Award. Oveta went on to become the first director of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, where she was instrumental in the fight against polio.

Little Free Libraries are dedicated to the principal of "Take a Book, Give a Book".  If Oveta Culp Hobby: Colonel, Cabinet Member, Philanthropist is unavailable in West U's Colonial Park, you can find more information about the book on the author's website.
